On March 10, 2017, the 13-year-old René Tracey Roman from Lavender Hill was kidnapped, raped and murdered. Only two weeks after her
disappearance, community members of Lavender Hill found her body close to her home.
As the number of children being kidnapped, abused, and killed on the Cape Flats are rising, Philisa Abafazi Bethu founded the "René
Roman Search and Rescue Team" as additional child protection service. Our team members are trained in first aid, know the area very
well and follow a structured search plan in order to find children as soon as possible. We work closely together with local police
departments. The Rescue Team also intervenes where children are neglected at home.
